Art Apart — Vol. 1 / Issue 5

Welcome to DJ Geribo's Art Apart Newsletter!

I love giving myself art projects — they always turn into wonderful challenges where I continue to grow not only as an artist but also as a person. The Daily Paintings — Animals project helped me to develop my skills as an artist but I also realized and came to the conclusion that I wanted to develop a more painterly style. I am thrilled with the style that I've developed and feel it more perfectly defines who I am as an artist. And now on to my next challenge where I will translate my newly formed style on large canvases. As you know, all my daily paintings were created on 5"x7" canvas boards. I'm looking forward to now working on 18x24, 20x30, and 30x40 sized canvases. I also want to explore more with pastels and watercolors. And that is why I love painting so much. It provides endless possibilities through a world of fun and exciting mediums with the potential to grow and expand my creative energies beyond my wildest dreams.

I am also excited about setting up gallery space at my home. This will be a seasonal space, June through October, where I will display my art work along with items from the business my husband Jim and I are building together, which is based on some of my artwork, Eye Help Animals, LLC (www.eyehelpanimals.com). Our business is growing and becoming the dream business Jim and I have always wanted.

Green Art — "Local Changes"

Because Jim and I walk our dogs almost daily on the road where we live, I had to start picking up the trash because I was sick of looking at it everyday. Now, as I mentioned in my last newsletter, I am not one to pick up after others, but it pained me to see the beer cans, broken bottles, and fast food containers on our walk. Not only do I not deserve to live in this kind of environment, but our planet does not deserve to be treated this way. We decided to take this to the next step and Jim contacted the NH State DOT and we are committing to cleaning up 2 miles along our road, 4 times a year. In our honor the state will erect signs with our Eye Help Animals business name at each end of the two-mile stretch to give credit to the ones who are cleaning up the road. To me Eye Help Animals should be on the sign (and not my and Jim's name) because helping animals in any way we can is the reason behind everything we do now and that is the mission of Eye Help Animals.

Art Quote

"Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant.  It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest. "

Tips for Artists

Acrylics are a wonderful, versatile medium. The best feature of acrylics is their fast-drying properties. Unlike oils that need drying time, acrylics dry quickly so that you can continue working, often finishing a painting in a day. Although fast-drying is a positive feature of acrylics, the down-side of using acrylics is that they are fast-drying! If you are using acrylics and walk away for any length of time, be sure to cover them (using a Sta-Wet palette is the best) or when you return they will be completely dried out. Or you can use Interactive Acrylics, which can be rewet and reworked.
