I decided that I needed to work on more than one painting at a time. With oils, you have to wait for the current layer to dry somewhat before you add more paint to it otherwise you will risk making mud on your canvas. I did a miniature painting of this particular fox composition(5"x7") that is for sale through my Daily Paintings - Animals gallery. I liked it so much I thought I would do a larger painting of it. Although not as big as my Tiger painting (18"x24") it is bigger than the miniature I did and I think it will be a better composition in a larger size.
Sometimes I find a wonderful composition and when I paint it 5"x7" I realize it needs to be larger to really show how exciting the composition is. In other words, the smaller size just does not do it justice. That was the case with the Fox pose - I took about 35 photos of this Fox who visited us last winter. This pose was one of my favorites. She sat very nicely in a variety of other poses but this one struck me as she stood there, posed, listening for whatever it was she heard moving under the snow. I also stood breathless as I watched her doing what she does so perfectly as only a wild animal can do. I couldn't fathom the depth of her hearing and treasured this moment as well as the photos I took.
Oh yea, how did I know it was a she? She had 5 kits last spring that we got just a few photos of - they came out at dusk mostly when my camera wasn't interested in taking pictures - and I didn't want to risk taking a flash, plus I figured I would only get window reflections.
