I love sitting on our deck, watching the birds, feeding the chipmunks, and enjoying the beautiful day. I was sitting out the other day when I suddenly heard all this chattering and crying and squawking! Not sure if it was a couple of chipmunks fighting over the seeds I supply them with, even though it didn't sound like chipmunks, I walked to the railing, looking at the ground for who could be making all that noise.
I didn't see any chipmunks but soon found the source of all the racket - it was a red squirrel. He was in the tree off the deck, not much more than 5 feet away, at my eye level. And he was looking at me as he continued squawking and crying and carrying on like there was a threat unlike any he had ever encountered.
I talked to him, quietly, hoping he would do the same and calm down. We continued to stare, he continued to squawk, I continued to speak softly. And then I looked away for a mere few seconds and when I looked back, he was gone. I saw just a tiny bit of his bushy red tail and he apparently ran to the other side of the tree. And then he was gone.
Although it was a short visit, I do always enjoy a visit from the little red squirrel. Maybe if he visited more often he would learn to trust the lady who throws out peanuts in the winter months that he gladly fills his cheeks with.
