I've been using pan pastels and
loving them! These versatile media, packaged in round...
plastic containers and stacked together, last much longer than the traditional stick pastels. And they have far less dust, which for some people. myself included, can cause respiratory issues, not to mention that the pastel dust is pure pigment floating through the air that you are breathing.
I bought the Painting set of 20 Pan Pastels awhile ago and didn't really experiment much with them. But lately I've been watching free webinars, sponsored by F&W Media/Artists Magazine featuring the fine art work of Johannes Vroothuis, and he has become a big advocate of the pan pastels. Watching him paint with pan pastels with such ease and the effects he quickly gets with them, inspired me to take out my set. After just a short time practicing with them I went to Amazon and ordered the Tints set of 20 and also the Extra Darks set of 20. I can't wait to play when these new sets arrive, also.
The complete set is 80 but with my Painting set I thought that the Tints and Extra Darks would give me enough range of colors to complete most of the paintings I would be working on. I still think that I will need the pastel pencils for fine details, but we'll see! For now, I'm excited about a medium which I've always loved satisfying my desire to work with them with minimal dust exposure.
